You’ve likely heard about the brain-gut connection or gut-brain axis. The good news is this connection can be used in more ways than you might expect. Typically, prebiotics, probiotics and even postbiotics are recommended as a solution for those with gastrointestinal and other digestive-related issues. But why limit these healthy bacteria to a nutrition focus?
Emerging research has shown that probiotics can be an important piece of the puzzle to overall wellness. They offer a variety of benefits. For example, studies have shown that 90 percent of serotonin, a key hormone for stabilizing mood, is made in the digestive tract. Other research has found links between gut health and cognitive function as well as physical health. While more studies need to be done, the research looks promising and is something many manufacturers and retailers are considering.
“Supplement companies are shifting their focus from just nutrition for the body to nutrition for the mind and the body,” said Dana VanBrocklin, CEO of South Carolina-based NutraLink USA. “After the life-changing past year, consumers are needing to take care of their mental wellbeing by leaning toward supplements that relieve stress and aid in sleeping. We expect to see more products with ingredients such as melatonin, B-Complex vitamins, valerian and cannabidiol gaining in popularity.”
