On Jan. 10, NOW Health Group (Bloomingdale, IL) announced a voluntary recall on Phosphatidyl Serine products from NOW Brand (Product Code 2392, Lot Numbers 3316650 and 3309243) and Protocol for Life Balance (Product Code P2392, Lot Numbers 3309194 and 3316624). Testing revealed some units from these lot numbers failed to meet label claims.

NOW was first alerted to the issues from a report by ConsumerLab and immediately began an investigation.

NOW’s Phosphatidyl Serine products are supposed to contain 324 mg of phosphatidylserine for the 300 mg capsules to achieve the label claim. NOW employs contract manufacturers in addition to its facility in Sparks, NV to produce its products. According to NOW, third-party testing revealed the “issues with the homogeneity of the material,” indicating its facilities may have difficulty blending lecithin consistently.

“While there is no health risk in this situation, we take regulatory compliance and meeting label claims seriously, and giving consumers what they pay for even more seriously,” said Dan Richard, vice president of global sales and marketing at NOW. “We appreciate being alerted to this issue by ConsumerLab, which is a catalyst to reexamine our already robust quality assurance oversight. We are issuing a voluntary recall and being transparent with the industry as a first step, to be followed by additional safeguards to our QA protocols, especially for products we don’t make ourselves.”

NOW is currently working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to execute the voluntary recall and fix the label claim issues.
