[Extra! Extra!] Probi’s HEAL9 Protects Against Inflammaging, According to Study

by Lisa Schofield | August 1, 2024

Probi has announced results of a new study on its HEAL9 probiotic strain that has shown specific benefits in inflammaging, a term describing chronic inflammation that accompanies and exacerbates aging.

The UN has estimated that the population aged 65 years and older will continue to rise during the coming years, eventually doubling by 2050. With an increased older population, more and more people are actively searching for ways to improve their longevity and healthy aging.

The new study is the fourth clinical study performed on Probi’s proprietary strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HEAL9 (HEAL9) investigating its benefits in the gut-brain area. The new study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of HEAL9, alone or in combination with berries, in adults aged 70 and older. The results showed significantly reduced levels of inflammation, often implicated in the development of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.

Supplementation with HEAL9 was shown to reduce inflammatory levels, with significantly decreased calprotectin overall compared to placebo. Significantly fewer participants had elevated calprotectin at the study’s end compared to placebo. There was also a tendency of diminished pro-inflammatory markers C-reactive protein and TNF-alpha within the HEAL9 group not seen with placebo. Cognitive assessment using the Trail Making Test also showed improvement with HEAL9 consumption. The combination of HEAL9 with berries did not seem to have a greater effect in improving low-grade inflammation than HEAL9 alone.

“The new data obtained in older adults follows a previous study, published in 2023, in which the HEAL9 strain was shown to support and improve cognitive performance, as well as memory, mood and sleep in adults at the age of 21-52 years. Supporting cognitive functions and healthy aging is relevant for everyone who wants to live healthier lives for a longer time, and we are confident that our Probi Sensia concept is relevant for many age groups seeking to lay the foundation for better health later in life” stated Anita Johansen, CEO Probi AB.
