Smoothies are skyrocketing for health-conscious Americans, notably Millennials, said Stacey Gillespie, director of product marketing, with New Hampshire-based MegaFood.
Ron Seibold, co-founder of Pines International agrees, noting, “Smoothies have become very popular, but green smoothies made from traditional greens and other vegetables are short on chlorophyll and the other nutrient dense characteristics of cereal grasses and alfalfa,” he points out. Retailers, he asserted, should encourage customers to fortify their smoothies by adding a spoonful of a “quality green superfood packaged in oxygen-free amber glass bottles such as those used by Pines. For a quick plant-based protein smoothie, we offer our new Mighty Greens formulation of wheatgrass, alfalfa, hemp protein and stevia for a great tasting beverage mixed only with water. Our other products can be taken alone with water or mixed with juices to make a juice more useful for probiotic bacteria. For those seeking convenience, we offer products in tablets and capsules.”
A new book available in November, “Simple Green Smoothies: 100+ Tasty Recipes to Lose Weight, Gain Energy and Feel Great in Your Body,” by authors Jen Hansard and Jadah Sellner (Rodale, ISBN: 978-1-62336-641-4; $24.99) presents a wide variety of delicious, innovative and extraordinarily healthful smoothies.
Authors Jen Hansard and Jadah Sellner met as first-time moms on the playground. They were not eating well, struggling with post baby weight and yearning for more energy to keep up with their little ones. Together, they discovered how to make a delicious green smoothie, instantly became hooked and immediately went from exhausted and defeated to energized and empowered. The more they drank green smoothies, the more their bodies craved fruits and vegetables. The duo began sharing recipes on social media, which gained a quick following of more than 380,000 people. Further, they began hosting the popular, free 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge, attracting more than one million participants, and their website, SimpleGreenSmoothies.com, has grown into the number-one green smoothie lifestyle website.
Instead of counting calories or eliminating whole food groups, the authors suggest drinking one green smoothie daily. With a 10-day green smoothie kick start plan, and chapters such as Natural Beauty and Green Smoothie Bowls, the book should be a bestseller in your store.
