On June 3, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) released the results of a new survey* which shows widespread consumer use and value in dietary supplements, and strong support for modernizing federal regulations.
According to the survey, 92 percent of consumers agree supplements had a positive impact on their overall health, wellness and quality of life, 83 percent use dietary supplements to support wellness needs and 82 percent say it is important to have convenient access to supplements.
Most consumers trust the safety of dietary supplements, but there is still room to further strengthen confidence in safety, awareness and regulations.
According to the survey, 88 percent of consumers are “confident” in supplement safety, but only 44 percent of those respondents are “very confident.” Further, 48 percent believe dietary supplements are regulated by the government with most “incorrectly assuming” they are regulated the same as prescription and the over the counter (OTC) drugs.
Many consumers agree “current regulations should be updated and strengthened to protect consumers” with 75 percent supporting federal legislation to modernize the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) of 1994, according to the association.
In conclusion, Americans agree “a modernized regulatory structure will protect public health and reinforce the credibility of the dietary supplement category, allowing it to play a more influential role in the health care system.”
“This survey reinforces what we’ve long known: Americans rely on dietary supplements as part of their daily health routine—and they expect a strong regulatory system to ensure the safety and quality of the products they consume,” said Scott Melville, president and CEO of CHPA. “It’s time to update DSHEA to further safeguard consumers from bad actors, facilitate industry innovation, and bring greater transparency to this fast-growing category of consumer health care products.”
*The survey was conducted by Peak Insights via online interviews that took place Feb. 19–20, 2025. Peak Insights conducted 1,169 interviews among a representative sample of USA voters nationwide; the voters were screened from a consumer panel.
