Chaundra Smith Turner had a very real problem to solve, right in her own home. Her husband and two of her children were suffering from unrelenting eczema and her other children had very dry skin. With each new product she tried, she was consistently disappointed by the lack of quality and the short time that the product lasted. She found that she had to reapply [the product] multiple times in a day.
She knew there wasn’t a cure for eczema, but there had to be something that would give her family some relief. Turner did extensive research to find ingredients that would work well for keeping eczema prone skin thoroughly moisturized. After trying different combinations, she landed on a solution that nourished and hydrated skin and her All Over Butter was born. It contains shea and avocado butters and ceramide-rich oils. She tried it on her family and found that it was the only thing that helped with their eczema and painfully dry skin. She knew that others battled this problem, as well, and began offering her emollient cream to the masses. She then launched Ultimate Hydration, which is a nut-free product for people with nut allergies.
Chatham Natural Skin Care now has more than 20 products. The company specializes in skin care formulated to provide relief for dry, sensitive, eczema-prone skin, as well as products to support the nourishment of the skin.
Question: How did your product line begin?
Answer: My husband and two of our kids (ages 8 and 9) have eczema and our other kid (12) has extremely dry skin. We would try different products and be disappointed because of the lack of quality and the length of time the product would keep their skin moisturized. I started doing extensive research for ingredients that worked great for eczema and dry skin and All Over Butter was born.
Question: You have mentioned that your husband works with you. Is this a family run business? Do other members of the family work with you?
Answer: Yes, it is a family run business. Sometimes our kids help but they have the attention span of a gnat, haha! When the kids help, they help with small things, such as labeling and sorting out order sheets.
Question: You worked for a clinical trial company in the past. How did having this background impact your product line?
Answer: I was working in clinical research and it helped with knowing the importance of having All Over Butter participate in a small clinical trial. It allowed us to make sure that our product didn’t have allergens and works great for people with sensitive skin. We finished our clinical trial in January 2021. (In my past work in clinical trials, I worked as a buyer and in investigator payments. I wasn’t a clinical researcher.)
Question: All Over Butter was your first product. How was the product developed, and what skin issues does it address?
Answer: All Over Butter focuses on eczema. We all know that there isn’t a cure for eczema. We educate our customers on the importance of avoiding their eczema triggers and keeping their skin moisturized. All Over Butter’s main focus is to help seal in the moisture that your skin needs. We make sure to use moisturizing butters and ceramide-rich oils.
Question: Why is skin sensitivity a concern for you and what should retailers and consumers know about skin care products and sensitivity?
Answer: Eczema and sensitive skin go hand in hand. Retailers and consumers should get in the habit of reading labels and try to avoid ingredients that could possibly irritate their skin. Try to use fragrance-free products. If you decide that you want some scent, make sure it has an essential oil instead of a fragrance oil.
Question: What is next for your company?
Answer: We have a few new products coming out next quarter and are super excited about that.
