As more consumers take on an interest in longevity, an emerging distinction is coming into sharp focus: The distinction between lifespan and healthspan. While one’s lifespan is however long one lives, one’s healthspan is the number of years one spends in a state of good health. In Dr. Eric Topol’s 2025 book Super Agers, Dr. Topol noted that the perception of what “old age” means is changing. As more consumers live longer, the gap between life expectancy and “health-adjusted life expectancy” (the number of years one spends in good health) is widening. Dr. Topol concludes that rather than playing Whac-A-Mole with different age-related diseases, the health field should be looking to increase healthspan.
