Consumers are increasingly measuring their days in terms of a health span rather than a lifespan. While a lifespan is how long someone lives, a health span is how long that person stays active and healthy. According to Fortune, the earliest mentions of the term “health span” describe it as maintaining full bodily function for as long as possible.
Dr. Scott Braunstein, internal medicine and emergency medicine doctor and the national medical director at Sollis Health, told Fortune in April 2023 that the gap between the average health span and the average lifespan is now 10 years. In essence, the average person tends to live the last 10 years of their life in poor health and with a poor quality of life.
That’s where healthy aging supplements come into play. A 2020 article in the Journal of Nutritional Science has found that access to better nutrition may improve health in old age, emphasizing the need for further study on dietary interventions for healthy aging.
Supplement retailers have a critical role to play in promoting healthy aging. Retailers can take a proactive approach in educating their aging consumers regarding the benefits of supplementation, from improved vision to superior bone strength and more.
