Xlear Inc. (American Fork, UT), a leader in xylitol-based nasal and oral care products, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The company has a long-standing commitment to promoting proactive health and wellness solutions through natural ingredients.

According to the company, xylitol has been shown to block adhesion of bacteria and viruses in nasal passages, reduce inflammation, stimulate natural defense systems, hydrate the nasal and sinus passages, reduce cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth and increase saliva production to protect and repair teeth.

In the late 1990s, Dr. Alonzo Jones discovered the benefits of xylitol, a natural sweetener found in many fruits and vegetables, while searching for a solution to treat his patients with persistent upper respiratory infections. Using xylitol, he was able to reduce recurring ear infections in his patients and some of his grandchildren.

Jones began dispensing the solution to other patients with ear, nose and throat issues resulting in equally positive outcomes. Later, he discovered studies from Finland on the effects of xylitol and created the first-ever saline nasal spray with xylitol.

In 2000, Jones’ son, Nathan Jones, took his father’s mission further. He bottled the formula to create the Xlear Nasal Spray and in 2002, he launched Spry, the dental defense line dedicated to xylitol-based oral hygiene products.
