[Extra! Extra!] Mondays May Be Dangerous to One’s Health

by Joy Choquette | September 2, 2025

Many individuals dread Monday mornings. In fact, studies have proven that Mondays are the day most likely for someone to experience a serious heart attack.1 Now, new research by the University of Hong Kong has additional light to shed on the topic.

A recent study tracking thousands of older adults found that those who dread Mondays can continue to carry elevated cortisol in their hair for months.2 Researchers call this a “stress echo” and it may play a role in why someone could be more at risk for a heart attack on a Monday versus another day of the week.

The term researchers in this study used is “anxious Monday.” It was found that those who feel anxious on Mondays exhibit significantly higher levels of long-term stress hormones. This was true even up to two months after the study in these individuals.

So, what can be done?

It’s important to combat stress symptoms in healthy ways. While watching TV for hours, scrolling on one’s phone, or reaching for another drink might help numb one’s anxious feelings in the short-term, it isn’t healthy or useful as a long-term solution.

Being active, getting good sleep, trying a calming activity like yoga, prayer, or walking are better outlets. There is also a plethora of natural supplements on the market which may help to further promote relaxation for individuals who are struggling with stress.
