The Environmental Working Group (Washington, D.C., EWG) Food Database has been years in the making and its release is just weeks away, reported the faction. EWG announced soon consumers will have access to ratings on more than 80,000 food products based on three key factors: nutrition, ingredient concerns and degree of processing ­right at their fingertips.

“As a valued member of the EWG community, we’re giving you an opportunity to be one of the first to know when this one-of-a-kind tool is released,” said Ken Cook, president, EWG.

According to the website, the EWG empowers people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment, driving consumer choice and civic action with breakthrough research and an informed public.

“With our grocery stores shelves brimming with processed foods and foods with ingredients no one can pronounce, it’s often difficult for shoppers to wade through the options and choose the best foods for themselves and their families,” said Cook. “That’s why EWG created the Food Database ­ to take the work out of grocery shopping by giving you access to information on tens of thousands of foods in a simple, searchable online format.

Cook said consumers will not find a comparable resource anywhere else. Believe me, we’ve looked,” said Cook.” I can’t wait for you to use it.”
