Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are beneficial for many different conditions. Chris Gearheart, director of member communications and engagement at GOED Omega-3 in Utah, explained that EFAs are also important throughout many life stages.
“The majority of users are older people who are becoming more concerned about their health,” Gearheart said. “In particular consumers with heart-related risks are more likely to be recommended omega-3s. Additionally, pregnant and nursing mothers are an important population due to the importance of DHA for fetal and infant brain and eye development.”
Dry eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, infant brain health, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and other health issues have been improved for some through the addition of EFAs in the diet, according to National Institutes of Health (NIH). As with any supplementation, however, it’s important to work with one’s physician. NIH points out that, “Omega-3 dietary supplements may interact with the medications you take. For example, high doses of omega-3s may cause bleeding problems when taken with warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulant medicines.”
