On Jan. 12, The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) issued a warning to consumers against purchasing any “supplements” containing tianeptine.

These products contain an illegal opioid-like ingredient that can lead to significant health risks. As the product is widely available in gas stations and convenience stores, it is often nicknamed “gas station heroin.”

Tianeptine is recognized as an adulterated ingredient by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has issued a warning due to the ingredients; potential for abuse and adverse neurological, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal issues, CRN said. Tianeptine has received significant coverage in recent months.

“Recent media coverage has highlighted the growing concern over these fake supplements. Reports have documented cases of adverse effects and increased calls to poison control centers related to tianeptine exposure,” the association said. “CRN stresses the importance of purchasing dietary supplements from reputable sources and encourages consumers to consult healthcare professionals before starting any new supplement regimen, or to purchase supplements from reputable companies the association represents.”

CRN is committed to consumer safety of the dietary supplement industry and urged consumers to report any issues related to tianeptine to FDA, the association said.
