Amazon Receives FDA Warning Letter Over Tainted “Supplement” Products

by Eric Munson | December 27, 2023

On Dec. 20,  the e-commerce platform Amazon received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the distribution of products in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

An FDA investigation revealed that various products labeled as “energy-enhancing supplements” or “dietary supplements” on Amazon contain undisclosed and potentially dangerous pharmaceutical ingredients including sildenafil and tadalafil. These two ingredients are powerful phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors and are the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis, according to FDA.

“The danger of these undisclosed ingredients lies in their potential interaction with nitrates commonly found in medications like nitroglycerin. Consumers with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease often take nitrates,” FDA said in the letter. “This combination can lead to highly dangerous drops in blood pressure.”

Amazon has 15 working days from receipt of the letter to respond to the claims.
