Vitamin D Advised for Both Adults and Children

by Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta | September 1, 2016

According to a recent broad analysis conducted by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), it’s advised that 10 micrograms of Vitamin D must be consumed each day to protect muscles and bone health – especially for children over the age of one.

Unless vitamin D is included in a baby formula, infants and children up to the age of four should be taking supplements every day, according to Professor Peter Selby, University of Manchester.

He stated, “In particular, it dispels any doubt of the place of vitamin D in the maintenance of bone health and should ensure that all people will now be encouraged to receive vitamin D to reduce their risk of bone disease and fracture.”

The foremost purpose of vitamin D is to normalize calcium and phosphate amounts for development and preservation of muscles, bones and teeth.

In severe cases, children who don’t get enough vitamin D could develop rickets, which causes bones to be soft and frail, and possibly deformed while they are still developing.

Though previously thought that people would get enough vitamin D from sunlight, the new recommendation is established on data collected over the past five years according to Dr. Louis Levy, head of nutrition science at Public Health England. He stated that those who apply sunscreen in the way manufacturers recommended would not make enough vitamin D.

Time spent in the sun differs for each person. A short period in the sun without sunscreen is safe; but too much exposure to sunshine increases skin cancer threats.
