On June 5, United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI, Providence, RI) suffered from a cyberattack, when the company noticed “unauthorized activity” on some of its information technology (IT) systems.

According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, UNFI activated its incident response plan, which involved taking certain systems offline, impacting the company’s ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders. The incident has caused temporary disruptions to business operations.

UNFI said is it working actively to “assess, mitigate and remediate” the incident with the assistance of third-party cybersecurity professionals and has notified law enforcement. The company has implemented workarounds for certain operations as it works to restore its systems.

In a statement submitted on June 11, UNFI said, “We continue working steadily to safely restore our systems and provide the services our customers and suppliers know and expect from us. As of today, we’re gradually bringing our ordering and receiving capabilities back online, with the goal of further increasing our capacity over the coming days. The investigation is ongoing with the support of leading forensics experts. Our customers, suppliers, and associates are our highest priority. We continue to work closely with them to minimize disruptions as much as possible.”

UNFI is the main distributor for Whole Foods Market (Austin, TX). A spokesperson for Whole Foods said the company is working to restock shelves as quickly as possible.
