As the first trade agreement to specifically mention dietary supplements, on Jan. 29, President Trump signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Under the terms of the deal, the dairy industry, which includes manufacturers of whey protein, could see an increase in sales to Canada. NPA (Natural Products Association) applauded the Trump Administration for reaching the new trade deal.
“The Natural Products Association shares the Trump Administration’s commitment to protecting American jobs and growing the U.S. economy,” said Daniel Fabricant, PhD, president and CEO of NPA. “This is a good deal for the small businesses that make up the majority of our industry and the millions of consumers who use nutritional supplements every day to support their healthy lifestyles. We applaud the Administration for reaching this deal and look forward to finding more ways to grow the economy and create jobs together.”
According to Reuters, USMCA will replace the 26-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, including tougher rules on labor and automotive content but leaving $1.2 trillion in annual U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade flows largely unchanged. Mexico has already approved the deal, but it must still be ratified by Canada’s parliament before it can take effect.
