NPA Secures Provision for Food Products in Senate CBD Bill

NPA Secures Provision for Food Products in Senate CBD Bill

by Angela Sabarese | May 24, 2021

New legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate includes a provision that would regulate food products containing CBD. A version introduced in the U.S. House failed to include the provision concerning food products and was added to the Senate’s version following a lobbying effort by NPA to expand the scope of the bill. While NPA supports the addition of food products in this legislation, the association continues to believe the best approach to regulating CBD is to set a safe level of daily consumption.

“Setting a safe level of daily exposure remains the number one issue when it comes to regulating CBD products,” said Daniel Fabricant, Ph.D., president and CEO of NPA. “It’s Congress’ job to keep the FDA accountable, but this is like slapping a band-aid on a bullet wound. Setting a safe level of daily consumption will not only keep the FDA accountable, but also set an important precedent that will pave the way for future cannabinoids and hemp constituents in foods and dietary supplements.”
