CRN Commends House Passage of Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act

CRN Commends House Passage of Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act

by Angela Santoriello | September 22, 2014

The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), a leading dietary supplement and functional food industry trade association, praised the U.S. House of Representatives for its passage of the Designer Anabolic Steroid Control Act (DASCA) of 2014 (H.R. 4771), introduced by Reps. Joe Pitts (R-PA) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ).

H.R. 4771, the companion bill to S. 2012 that was introduced in the Senate earlier this year, would give the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) additional authority to identify and quickly respond when new designer anabolic steroids are falsely marketed as dietary supplements, according to CRN, noting the council has been highly engaged in bipartisan discussions with legislators in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, emphasizing the importance of DASCA to consumers and responsible industry alike.

Mike Greene, vice president, government relations, CRN, said the council thanks Reps. Pitts and Pallone for their leadership in promoting DASCA among their House colleagues and congratulates the House of Representatives on passage of this important bill.

“If DASCA is passed by Congress and signed into law by the president, DEA’s enhanced authority would help protect consumers from illegal products that could present safety concerns and will give them greater confidence that the products brought to market and sold as dietary supplements are legal,” said Greene. “We urge the Senate to follow suit and expedite DASCA’s enactment.”
