ConsumerLab.com, a health product testing company, completed evaluations of ashwagandha herbal supplements known to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as other potential applications, with accurate labeling and daily doses in-line with those used in successful clinical trials.
“It’s very hard to find a good ashwagandha supplement,” said Tod Cooperman, MD, president of ConsumerLab.com.
In the past, studies have shown that ashwagandha root preparations provide 6 mg per a daily serving of withanolides. However, eight ashwagandha supplement studies conducted by ConsumerLab.com found that three contained less than this amount, in fact, one provided less than 1 mg. An additional product contained only 64.7 percent of withanolides expected from its label, while two similar products consisted of much larger amounts of withanolides.
ConsumerLab.com’s three products were Approved for Quality, and one of the products was tested through ConsumerLab.com’s voluntary Quality Certification Program. None of the three products exceeded the contamination limits for lead, cadmium or arsenic that can occur in herbal supplements.
