When most people think of calcium, images of milk and strong bones come to mind.
But as David O’Leary, commercial manager of Marigot Ltd., an Irish-based company which specializes in Aquamin, a seaweed-derived mineral source, said, research shows that Aquamin (which includes calcium, magnesium and small amounts of other minerals) can help increase calcium metabolism.
“We have seen unique efficacy in our plant based marine mineral complex. Studies have shown that this material possesses some impressive bioactivity when compared to other forms of non-plant minerals such as widely used limestone,” O’Leary told Vitamin Retailer. “Our data shows clearly that the unique mineral matrix present in Aquamin is quick to deliver its effect by suppressing PTH hormone more effectively than what can be found with just straight calcium (carbonate) on its own. This shows us that the calcium in Aquamin is highly bioactive and [is] also very fast acting.”
