Vitamin and mineral supplements can be important for overall health, especially if one does not get enough of them from diet alone.
The Cleveland Clinic recommends taking vitamin A to help fight infection; maintain healthy vision; maintain heart, lung and kidney health; keep skin healthy; and to strengthen bones and teeth. It recommends vitamin B to maintain normal brain function and memory; maintain normal metabolism; improve cholesterol; reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke; and to maintain normal blood cell production and nervous system function.
Vitamin C, according to the Clinic, is helpful for immune health; maintaining skin and tissue health; and strengthening bones and teeth. Similarly, vitamin D supports immune health; bone health; maintains nervous system functions; and regulates blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
The Clinic recommends vitamin E to protect cells from damage from toxins; maintain muscle function; and reduce risk of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Vitamin K is recommended for help in rapid wound healing; creating strong bones and protecting against heart disease. Calcium is needed for muscle function; healthy blood pressure; aiding in hormone secretion; maintaining strong bones and teeth; and decreasing the risk of osteoporosis.
Iron is an important mineral for improving immune function; providing energy; improving cognitive ability; and carrying oxygen in the blood, according to the Clinic. Lastly, zinc reduces the risk of cancer; improves the immune system; improves memory; and reduces symptoms of the common cold.
All of these vitamins and minerals can play a significant role in maintaining different areas of health, whether they are obtained through diet or supplementation.
