The omega-3 industry is on the move and as the market continues to gravitate toward new product concepts and innovations, it is crucial for industry players to push ahead, ready to meet the needs of consumers globally. Aker BioMarine, a leading supplier of krill-derived products to the consumer health and wellness and animal nutrition markets, is on the forefront of new developments in the omega-3 category.

Aker BioMarine recently opened a new facility in Houston, TX, which means all of the company’s future products will be “Made in the USA.” The new plant will also enable the company to create new and better products, while enhancing its 100 percent traceable and sustainable position in the omega-3 market.

The plant is home to Flexitech, a new and patented technology platform exclusive to Aker BioMarine. Flexitech will appeal to all industry players from brand owners and encapsulators to formulators, and even down to the end user. Considered a game changer in the omega-3 industry, Flexitech will focus on two key areas: detection and concentration.

Flexitech will give the company the ability to up-concentrate krill oil’s various beneficial components, such as phospholipids and omega-3s while removing salts, which can lead to off odors and taste. The technical benefits include: an increase of phospholipids up to 50 percent, as well as an increase in EPA and DHA bound to phospholipids of up to 40 percent. This process can also increase total EPA and DHA from 20 to 30 percent as well as choline levels by up to 40 percent. These substantial improvements can yield potential health claims in some markets and give customers more potency per capsule.

The process is special within itself as there is no form of high temperature treatment such as molecular distillation being used, which is a common method used with other marine omega-3 oils. Furthermore, Flexitech does not involve the use of any solvents besides ethanol and water. Rather it relies solely on low temperature and efficient fractionation methods that remove unwanted salts and other polar constituents.

And since Aker already controls 100 percent of its supply chain, customers can be reassured that they will continue to receive a secure supply volume and product quality, as well as seamless service. From fishing to extraction to concentration, Aker BioMarine has firmly positioned itself to be transparent—from catch to capsule.

Superba2, the next generation of Superba Krill Oil, is now being commercially produced at the Houston, TX facility. Considered little, red and more powerful than ever, Superba2 offers several improvements over today’s krill formulations. New product features include a new and improved formulation with enhanced encapsulation properties as well as improved smell, taste and visual appearance.

In addition to making a better krill oil, Flexitech will have the ability to produce Aker’s first krill oil concentrate called Superba Boost.
