25th Anniversary and the Year of the Mushroom

2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Mushroom Wisdom Inc. (MWI) bringing the finest medicinal mushroom research-supported products to the West. While mushrooms have been used traditionally for thousands of years, MWI actually began 25 years ago, as Maitake Products Inc. in an effort to bring the health and immune supporting benefits of the maitake mushroom to those in need. While the maitake was widely and highly prized as a delicious food, it did not have the thousands of years of hands-on traditional experience that mushrooms like cordyceps and reishi. Thankfully MWI’s awareness changed as researchers began to explore the benefits and actions that maitake offers.

Initially the first and only product that was offered was Grifron Maitake, a simple and straightforward whole maitake mushroom powder that offered up a full range of Maitake’s actions. As MWI began to further research this promising mushroom they found a specific and unique beta glucan constituent effective for supporting healthy immune function.* This became known as D-fraction. Independent research confirmed that the D-fraction was one of nature’s most potent immune tonics in comparative studies exhibiting the ability to increase numbers and activity of immune cells.*

Further research into the maitake mushroom led to discoveries related to its promising actions for supporting healthy blood sugar and insulin levels.* As a result of these studies MWI developed the SX-fraction. The benefits and research did not stop there. Other work investigated a number of benefits for maintaining cardiovascular health support as well as reproductive health in women.*

After 10 years of being a “one mushroom” company, MWI introduced a line of individual mushrooms, all “super” enhanced for greater immune support with the addition of the Maitake D-fraction.* This “Super” line included Agaricus, Coriolus, Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Shiitake and Tremella. Recently the Chaga and Meshima mushrooms were added to the Super line for their much-needed intriguing and broad actions.* Soon to be introduced at Expo West 2016 will be Poria, one of the most widely used remedies in traditional Chinese medicine. At MWI’s traditional Japanese breakfast and lecture Dr. Konno will report on his most recent work looking at some of Poria’s benefits and actions for kidney health.*

With the introduction of Aquamella, a hydrating face cream, MWI was again at the forefront of the beneficial and diverse uses of mushrooms. Aquamella contains the unique active ingredient, tremella polysaccharides, that have been shown in independent work to hydrate the skin better and longer than the widely used hyaluronic acid. As a traditional yin tonic, tremella was said to be one of the beauty secrets of Yang Guifei, a woman reputed to be so beautiful that flowers would bow before her beauty.

An excellent example of MWI’s commitment to research is seen in the development of its Amyloban 3399, a unique product made from the powerful proprietary extract of lion’s mane mushroom that is deeply grounded in the latest research. The evidence suggests that active constituents (hericenones and amyloban) contained in the proprietary extract may help support the health and vitality of the brain.* Other studies with Amyloban 3399 have found benefits for supporting healthy nerves, quality sleep, energy and mood.* There has also been a number of extraordinary results seen in numerous case studies, some of which have been published, that MWI is continuing to explore and research.

By 2010, the company acknowledged its role as a leader in the mushroom category by changing its name to the current one, Mushroom Wisdom, Inc., to better reflect its range of products. By embracing the word “wisdom” as part of its new company name, MWI honors the thousands of years of use of these powerful healing allies in traditional medicine, while also emphasizing its deep commitment to furthering our knowledge and understanding with scientific research.

In its role as an industry and category leader, MWI takes its responsibilities very seriously and is committed to offering the safest and most effective natural remedies available. MWI has developed proprietary extractions of several mushrooms to further enhance their beneficial actions. MWI has supported and continues to support investigations into the wondrous world of mushrooms at such places as Georgetown University, New York Medical College in the U.S. and Shizuoka University in Japan as well as by researchers such as Harry Preuss, MD, Hirokazu Kawagishi, PhD and Sensuke Konno, PhD. MWI is being operated under full compliance of cGMP (current good manufacturing practice), all mushroom materials are verified for identity prior to production and every batch of product is tested.

With companies like Mushroom Wisdom leading the way, 2016 may very well turn out to be the “Year of the Mushroom.”
