Empowering People to Lead Healthier Lives
NOW’s commitment to the natural products channel has been demonstrated since the company was founded by Elwood Richard in 1968. Still owned by the Richard family today, the company sells more than 1,400 natural products, including dietary and herbal supplements, personal care products, essential oils, sports nutrition, and foods. NOW products are distributed in 60 countries around the world, and the company employs 1,500 people in North America. NOW is recognized for its commitment to quality and making good nutrition affordable, and still adheres to its original mission: To provide value in products and services that empower people to lead healthier lives.
NOW operates a cutting-edge manufacturing facility in Bloomingdale, IL, a second manufacturing and distribution center in Sparks, NV, and a manufacturing facility in Ontario, Canada. The in-house labs and testing capabilities are second to none in the dietary supplements industry.
NOW has augmented the company’s outstanding testing capabilities with new equipment to verify the identity and purity of the company’s key probiotic products. NOW recently installed the Dupont RiboPrinter System, which uses DNA-fingerprinting technology to identify specific strains of bacteria as well as unknown microorganisms. While accuracy of DNA testing for herbal products is somewhat controversial in the industry, its use in microbial testing is well established in sterile manufacturing or food processing plants and in hospitals. DNA use in verifying probiotic strains is a newer application of the technology, and NOW is the first dietary supplement brand to have this advanced quality capability in house. The company can now guarantee that the strain on the label is in the bottle. A special logo on the bottle will show that the probiotics have been verified.
Steadfastly dedicated to the natural food retailer for more than 45 years, NOW offers many services to help retailers build business, including a comprehensive online training program and an array of free tools designed to help them be more successful. The online retailer training program, NOW Product-ology, is designed to create experts in the aisle. Retail staff can watch quick and informative training videos, test their progress with quizzes and earn a completion certificate. The newest course, Supplement Quality, Safety & Regulation, presents regulation, cGMPs (current good manufacturing practices), and testing of dietary supplements to provide a thorough understanding of the industry.
NOW’s line of quality pet supplements developed under the guidance of renowned holistic veterinarian Barbara Royal, DVM, CVA, offers products specifically tailored to address today’s most common pet health concerns made with the same attention to quality as NOW’s supplements for humans. NOW Pets has been certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC). The NASC is an organization that works together with the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and committed manufacturers of animal health supplements to improve the quality of animal health products.
NOW has received many awards for its products, domestic and international business growth, employee programs, and philanthropic and environmental initiatives. For nine years in a row, NOW has been honored by the National Association for Business Resources as one of “Chicagoland’s 101 Best & Brightest Companies to Work For,” and has made the national list for four consecutive years.
