The Science of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract for Healthy Blood Pressure

Often called the “silent killer” because it typically has no symptoms, hypertension affects nearly one-third of all adults in America.1,2 Of those who have been diagnosed with the condition, about half don’t have their hypertension under control. And because blood pressure is so easy to ignore, 18 percent of people with hypertension are blissfully unaware of their own condition.3 Yet, in the case of hypertension, ignorance is not bliss since the condition can lead to stroke, enlarged heart, congestive heart failure, kidney and eye damage, atherosclerosis, mental decline and an early death.

While pharmaceuticals are often the first line of treatment in a doctor’s arsenal for patients with hypertension, new research shows that a daily dose of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) can safely and effectively reduce blood pressure.4 This was clearly shown in a new double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 88 patients with uncontrolled hypertension. During the trial, which was jointly conducted by Australia’s National Institute of Integrative Medicine, Bond University, and the University of Australia, each participant was given a daily dose of either 1.2 g of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract per day or a placebo. After 12 weeks, the researchers found that the patients taking AGE saw a 11.5 mmHg drop in their systolic blood pressure and a 6.3 mmHg reduction in their diastolic pressure. In addition, the study’s authors note that AGE improved pulse wave velocity, a measure of arterial stiffness. The study also flushed out smaller benefits to the inflammatory marker TNF-α, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoproteins—all factors that increase the risk of a future heart attack.

This new trial builds on earlier research in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggesting that taking just two capsules—or 480 mg—of AGE each day can effectively lower systolic blood pressure by up to 12 mgHg. In that trial, 79 patients with uncontrolled hypertension above 140 mmHg were assigned to one of four groups. Three of the groups received AGE in doses of 240, 480 or 960 mg. The fourth group received a placebo. After 12 weeks, the researchers found that all of the patients taking AGE saw some reduction in their systolic blood pressure compared to placebo. However, those taking the 480 mg dose experienced the largest reduction—an average of 11.8 mmHg.5

The anti-hypertensive effects of AGE that are documented in this new trial, as well as those in the earlier study, aren’t surprising since Kyolic AGE has been linked to an increase in intracellular nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide while also blocking the production of angiotensin II, a protein that constricts blood vessels.6,7 What’s more, Kyolic AGE is standardized with the active sulphur compound S-allylcysteine—a compound that makes it more stable and bioavailable than other types of supplemental garlic. It’s proven so effective that the researchers have concluded that AGE offers benefits similar to first-line medication used to treat uncontrolled hypertension.8 And that’s great news for anyone looking for a natural way to manage their rising blood pressure.
