Promising Results in Alzheimer’s Resveratrol Study

by Corinne Anderson | September 14, 2015

According to a report by Alice Park in TIME Magazine, that glass of red wine at dinner may help slow down the decline in Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. R. Scott Turner, professor of neurology and director of the memory disorders program at Georgetown University Medical Team, created a purified form of resveratrol. Resveratrol is “a polyphenol compound found in certain plants and in red wine that has antioxidant properties and has been investigated for possible anti carcinogenic effects.” Resveratrol can be found in grapes, berries, peanuts, chocolate and red wine. Alzheimers

Turner and his team performed a study, involving 119 men (all with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s) where one took the resvertarol daily and the other group took a placebo for a year. The results “showed no change in the levels of a protein that builds up in the brains of Alzehimer’s patients” in the resveratrol group. It also showed no differences in spinal fluid and blood proteins, another positive sign, and smaller brain volume.

In this instance, smaller brain volume is a positive sign, since Alzheimer’s can “cause inflammation and swelling that can interfere with nerve connections.” According to the article, “Turner said the findings don’t suggest that red wine is a cure for Alzheimer’s. The amounts of resveratrol in the purified doses that the participants took were extremely high and beyond those found in the market currently—around what would be contain in about 1,000 bottles of red wine.”

He said that we need more studies to see if it really has a benefit and then if it can be turned into a more effective drug to treat and target Alzheimer’s.
