Natural Health Science: The Pycnogenol Experts
Natural Health Science (NHS) is the exclusive North American supplier of Pycnogenol® French maritime pine bark extract. Based in Hoboken, NJ, NHS has the exclusive rights to market and sell Pycnogenol and works with hundreds of companies to help them develop innovative and effective Pycnogenol product formulas. The ingredient is available in more than 700 dietary supplements, multivitamins, cosmetic and functional food and beverage products worldwide.

Horphag Research, NHS’ parent company, is the exclusive worldwide supplier and original developers of Pycnogenol. The company’s mission remains deeply rooted in a commitment to scientific research surrounding high-quality nutritional ingredients and this is reflected in the quality of products offered to customers. Over the last 40 years, Horphag Research has invested millions of dollars in scientific research and today Pycnogenol is one of the most evidence-based health ingredients in the industry with more than 280 scientific publications confirming its safety, non toxicity and clinical efficacy.

In recognition of the company’s strong commitment to research, NHS/Horphag Research has been named the winner of the 2010 SupplySide West Scientific Excellence Award for Pycnogenol. The award recognizes Pycnogenol as one of the most innovative and researched ingredients within the nutraceutical industries. The award also acknowledges Horphag Research’s significant investment of $1.5 million a year in Pycnogenol research over the last three years.

As a result of the company’s ongoing research agenda, a peer-reviewed monograph was published last year on Pycnogenol by the American Botanical Council (ABC). The monograph focuses on 17 human clinical studies of the ingredient and evaluates a wide variety of its applications, including anti-inflammatory, circulatory and joint health properties.

Keeping in line with NHS’s commitment to science and innovation, comprehensive research and development programs continue to be carried out and new health applications for Pycnogenol are explored every year in the fields of nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals and functional foods and beverages.

Main Product/Quality Assurance
Pycnogenol is a natural plant extract originating from bark of the French maritime pine tree, which grows exclusively along the coast of southwest France in Les Landes de Gascogne. Pine trees from which Pycnogenol is produced are grown as a mono-species forest. This unspoiled and natural forest environment is the unique source of Pycnogenol. The pine trees grow entirely without pesticides and no toxic solvents are used during production. It’s an ideal botanical source because the extracted components are not subject to seasonal variations like most other plants, which is important for having a high batch-to-batch consistency of the products. Pycnogenol is manufactured with the highest quality through a patented extraction process and is GMP.

The ingredient represents a natural combination of genetically programmed constant proportions of procyanidins, bioflavonoids and organic acids, which offer extensive natural health benefits. Pycnogenol has four basic properties—it’s a powerful antioxidant, acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, selectively binds to collagen and elastin, and finally, it aids in the production of endothelial nitric oxide, which helps to vasodilate blood vessels.

Pycnogenol is an evidence-based, proprietary extract and is protected by several U.S. and international patents. The ingredient has GMP certification, is kosher and GRAS-approved for applications in functional foods and beverages. Today, Pycnogenol is one of the most researched ingredients in the natural product marketplace with more than 7,000 patients being studied in more than 98 clinical studies. Published findings have demonstrated Pycnogenol’s beneficial health effects in cardiovascular and circulatory health, joint health, skin care, blood glucose, eye health and sports nutrition, among others.

Recent research findings demonstrated that Pycnogenol improved symptoms of tinnitus. Published last fall in Panminerva Medica, subjects who suffered mild to moderate tinnitus in one ear, experienced relief from tinnitus symptoms after treatment with Pycnogenol for four weeks improved blood flow in the inner ear.
