Grilled on Capitol Hill for promoting weight loss products on his television show, Dr. Oz countered these claims by saying he believes in the products he promotes, according to a CNN report.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance, questioned Dr. Oz’s credibility. “I don’t get why you need to say this stuff when you know it’s not true,” she said. “When you have this amazing megaphone, why would you cheapen your show? With power comes a great deal of responsibility.”
Green Coffee Beans seems to be one of the three products in question. In May, the Federal Trade Commission sued the sellers of Green Coffee Beans for deceiving consumers through fake news sites and invented health claims, reports CNN.
The commission said that weeks after “The Dr. Oz Show” promoted the benefits of Pure Green Coffee, some companies that marketed the product used video from his show to increase sales. Oz told the panel that he does use “flowery language” to describe certain products on his show but added he believes in them so much he has given them to his own family.
Another questionable product promoted by the famous TV doctor is Garcinia cambogia, noted to help individuals lose weight with “No Exercise. No Diet. No Effort.”
Even though Oz is noted for boasting the supplement on his show, he told representatives on Capitol Hill he could not be held responsible for what certain companies say online about the products. He said he’s toned down some of his language and will publish a list of products he thinks can help people lose weight, CNN reported. www.cnn.com
